Cougars, Lady Warriors undefeated in soccer action

    The Katahdin Cougars and Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors remain undefeated nearly midway through the season, as the Cougars are 5-0 and the Lady Warriors 6-0.
    On Monday, the Cougars shut out Schenck, 8-0 behind Marshall Davis’ four goals and two assists and Ethan Qualey’s two goals and two assists. Billy Duffy chipped in with two goals and Colby Gallagher added an assist. Goalie Jesse McNally had five saves on 10 shots faced.
    Last Friday, the Katahdin and Southern Aroostook teams squared off in Dyer Brook.
    On the boys’ side, the Cougars came away with a 4-2 win, as Qualey scored all of Katahdin’s goals in the first half, and Davis assisted on two of those tallies. Goalie Matt Tarr rejected 18-of-21 shots.
    For Southern Aroostook, David Dubois and Patrick Goodall both scored, while Dakota Sleeper and Jake Lassonde each assisted on the scores. Goalie Dillion Boulier made 18 saves on 23 shots faced for the Warriors.
    The Lady Warriors kept their perfect record intact with a 3-0 win over Katahdin.
    Brittany Charette took an Evangeline Goodall pass and scored the winning goal in the first half, while Janel and Jasmine Rockwell each added insurance goals. Goalie Emily Cummings blocked 5-of-11 shots, while Katahdin keeper Jade Clippinger turned back 15-of-25.
    The Lady Cougars fell 1-0 to Washburn last Wednesday in Stacyville.
    Megan Berube scored the game winner at the end of the first half. Clippinger made two saves in the game for Katahdin.
    Last Wednesday, the Lady Warriors blanked visiting Woodland, 4-0 behind goals from Charette, Janel Rockwell and the Goodalls, Liz and Evangeline. SACS goalie Cummings combined with Mallory Lawlor to make eight saves.
    Woodland netkeeper Taylor Cochran made 25 saves.
    The Cougars started their week with a 9-0 shutout against Washburn last Wednesday.
    Katahdin had 30 shots on net, as Davis racked up four goals and an assist and Qualey had two goals. Duffy, Matt Kay and Gallagher all scored a single goal, while Tarr and McNally combined to stop 6-of-10 shots faced.
    The Hodgdon Lady Hawks outscored Limestone/MSSM on Monday, 5-1 to rack up another victory for a 4-3-1 record.
    Kariann Estabrook and Sam Lycette both scored a pair of goals, while Kim Levesque chipped in with an assist. Goalie Emmaly Jurson made eight saves for the winners.
    On Friday, the Lady Hawks traveled to Danforth to pick up a win over the Vikings.
    “Both teams played a fairly even first half,” said Hodgdon coach Olin Quint.  
    Freshman Britta Oliver and Dayna Tidd both scored off Estabrook’s assists.
    Kelsey Daoust scored for East Grand with 40 seconds remaining in the first half, as Hodgdon led 2-1.
    “We started the second half strong scoring eight goals, while our defense kept them from scoring,” said Quint. “We played a lifeless first half. But we changed our defense and some positions and woke ourselves up in the second half.”
    Tidd led the Lady Hawks’ second-half drive with three goals, while Estabrook added a pair of goals and two assists. Taylor Hovey scored and chipped in with an assist, as Oliver, Kate Duff, Taylor McGary and Chelsea Sloat all scored. Lycette and Kelsey Foster contributed an assist each.  
    Hodgdon goalie Jurson stopped seven of their 14 shots, while East Grand goalie Courtney Lloyd had 23 saves on 40 Hodgdon shots.
    Last Wednesday, the Lady Hawks stopped Wisdom, 3-1.
    The Lady Hawks scored quickly when Oliver hit an unassisted goal 38 seconds into the game. Tidd then scored off an Estabrook assist to finish the first half scoring.
    Wisdom started the second half scoring with Chelsea Collin hitting an unassisted goal four minutes in.
    Hodgdon freshman Kim Levesque scored an unassisted goal with nine minutes remaining. Wisdom Goalie Suzie Collins had 11 saves on 28 shots. Jurson had a save on three Wisdom shots.  
    “We played great defense the whole game and got some good shots on goal,” said Quint. “One improvement that I liked was on our passing and the patience that the girls showed.”
    Last Tuesday, the East Grand Lady Vikings were blanked 4-0 by Easton. Goalie Lloyd made 20 saves against 36 shots faced.
    Last Wednesday, the Hodgdon Hawks were overpowered 6-1 by visiting Wisdom.
    Jake Tidd scored Hodgdon’s goal in the second half off a Josh Murchie set up. Hodgdon goalie Dan McGillicuddy made 11 saves on 23 shots faced.
    The East Grand Vikings fell to Easton, 6-0, last Tuesday. Goalie Abe Brittain rejected 20-of-28 shots faced.
    In Saturday’s action, the Houlton Shiretowners battled through double overtime to hang on for a 2-all tie against visiting Lee Academy.
    Justin Haggerty and Micah Goetsch scored unassisted first-half goals for Houlton, but Lee came back to tie the game with 14:04 left in regulation on a goal by Carston Kaiser, erasing a 2-0 deficit and earn a tie.
    Houlton goalie Ryan Van Buskirk stopped three of five shots, while Schenck netkeeper Alex Harris set back 10-of-12 shots faced.
    The Shires are now 2-5-1 on the season.
    Last Wednesday, the Shires overtook Schenck, 2-1 when Pat Longstaff scored unassisted with 2:41 left in overtime.
    Haggerty had the first goal on a Gary Fowler assist for Houlton, but Aaron Hutchins’ second-half goal tied the game to force an extra period. Houlton goalie Van Buskirk had 15 saves, while Schenck’s Jerome York stopped 22-of-28 shots faced.
    With a 4-1 victory over Lee, the Lady Shires are now riding a four game winning streak.
    “In those four games, we’ve outscored our opponents, 24-2,” said Houlton coach Tim Tweedie.
    Against Lee, Lainey Herring punched in three goals, while Amanda Fogarty tallied a goal for the Lady Shires. Chelsi Murray had three assists for the winners.
    Last Friday, the Lady Shires topped Schenck 9-0 behind two goals apiece from Courtney Putnam, Megan Skehan and Herring. Anna Caron, Erika Lackey and Abby Kinens all added a single tally for the winners.
    Houlton’s Madison Lezotte stopped all six shots she faced.
