The Katahdin High School varsity golfers finished with the best score in last Saturday’s Aroostook County Championship and Regional Qualifier at VaJoWa Golf Club in Island Falls. The Cougars shot a team score of 339 in the 72-hole event, which was 37 strokes lower than runner-up Central Aroostook. Finishing third was Fort Fairfield, 415; fourth, Hodgdon, 439 and fifth, Limestone/MSSM, 499.
Both Katahdin and Central Aroostook qualify for the upcoming Class C State Team Golf Championship at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro on Oct. 11.
Evan McCarthy of Katahdin defended his home course as the medalist of the tourney, firing a six-over-par 78. His teammates Josh Guiggey and Andrew Hawkins were two of only four others in the field to break 90. Guiggey shot an 84 and Hawkins an 87. Rounding out the scoring were Lucas Craig, 99; Brandon Robinson, 90 and Cody Cunningham, 111.
Leading Central Aroostook was Kaine Kingsbury, who carded an 88. Other Panthers scores were Will Delong, 92; Sean McIntyre, 90; Kasey Brewer, 106; T.J. Turley, 121 and Lawrence, 150.
The Hodgdon team scoring went as follows: Chris Williams, 90; Paul Griffin, 119; Cody Hand, 123; Steven Griffin, 119; A.J. Acott, 111 and Taylor Hovey, 115.
Southern Aroostook’s David Dubois was second to McCarthy, shooting an 81.
