Twenty-seven riders on horses and ponies, from the St. John Valley to Southern Aroostook, navigated the trails along the Maine — Canadian Border, 15 miles south of Houlton, during the Labor Day weekend ride-a-thon fund-raiser held by the Aroostook County Manes and Tails organization. The ride was hosted by Linda and Joel Long of Cary Plantation.

Riders ages four-years and older along with their families and friends enjoyed meals prepared by volunteers and were entertained at a campfire Saturday evening with music and sing-a-longs.
Many County individuals and businesses donated items or sponsored riders helping to make this trek the biggest Manes and Tails fund-raiser to date.
Businesses that helped to make the fund-raiser a success included: Lajoie Growers of Van Buren; Cary Medical Center, Griffeth Ford, Burger Boy, Paradis Shop’n’ Save, Farm Bakery; Wal-Mart, Caribou Bowl-a-Drome , Caribou Theater, Graves, McDonalds and Sirois’ Market. Also; Cindy’s Sub Shop, Savings Bank of Maine, Healing Hearts Ranch and Bartlett’s Store.
Individuals who made donations or sponsored riders were: Dian Radell, Shelley Taylor, Joel and Linda Long, Don Violette, Ann and Nate Day. Also; John Richards, Jimmy Knapp, Brent Cassidy, Larry Knapp, Sara Wotton, Pam Scheppele, Mike Anderson, Shirley and Russell Miller, Steve Hopkins and Michael Anderson.
