Soap Box Derby fall rally slated
    The Northern Maine Soap Box Derby is holding its annual fall rally on Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21 at Derby Hill in Community Park.

    The race will be double and single elimination on Saturday, with double elimination on Sunday. Cost is $30 per race. There will be all divisions of racing.
    Weigh-in is at 7 a.m. with races starting at 8 a.m. Drivers can accumulate rally points.

Soccer shoot-out scheduled
    The Houlton Lodge of Elks #835 is sponsoring a Soccer Shootout on Sunday, September 14 at the Houlton High School field.
    Registration will be 12 p.m., and a birth certificate will be required at registration to verify a contestant’s age by August 1. A parent or guardian must be present to sign consent at the event.
    There will be two contests for each age group, which will test different levels of skill at different ages.
    The “Five Goal Contest” is a series of five goals, decreasing in size from 48 inches to 17 inches. Age groups are divided into U-8, which includes all seven-year-old and younger participants and U-10, which includes eight and nine-year-olds. The contest is open to boys and girls, who will shoot separately.
    The U-8 participants kick from 15 feet from the face of the goal, while the U-10 contestants kick from 18 feet from the goal.
    The “Grid Goal Contest” consists of a full-size goal sectioned off so points can be scored when the ball is kicked into certain sections. This game is for the U-12 contestants, who are ages 10 and 11 and U-14, which are contestants ages 12 and 13. The contest is open to both boys and girls, who will shoot separately.
    Winners in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions for each age group will compete in the Northern District event at 9 a.m. in Millinocket on September 27. District winners will advance to the state competition on Oct. 18 in Augusta.
    Aerobics class offered by rec
    The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will be offered an aerobics class this fall. Classes will be held each Monday and Wednesday from 5-6 p.m. at the Gentle Memorial Building, starting on September 29.
    The class will include warm ups, aerobic phase and cool down. Participants should wear sneakers and comfortable clothes.
    Cindy Hutchinson will be the instructor. Cost for the eight-week program will be $40 for Houlton residents and $60 for non-Houlton residents. The class is limited to 20 participants. To register, call the Houlton Recreation Department at 532-1310 by September 29.

Autumn golf tourney slated
    The fifth annual Autumn Fall Tournament will be held to benefit Katahdin Valley Health Center’s diabetes programs on October 4 at VaJoWa Golf Club in Island Falls.
    The four-person scramble begins with a shotgun start at 9:45 a.m.  Cash prizes will be allotted to the top three gross and net winners. Cost is $50 per golfer or $200 per team. Sign up individually and be assigned to a team according to availability or register as a team.
    There will be special hole-in-one prize of $10,000, as well as awards for skins, pins and longest drive. Also available are Mulligan sales, string sales, a 50/50 raffle and lots of door prizes.
    Registration deadline is September 29. Early bird registration is encouraged.

5K road race set
    The University of Maine at Fort Kent athletic department will host a 5K race on Saturday, September 20, at the UMFK Sports Center, as part of the Homecoming/Scarecrow Festival weekend events. Race time is set for 10 a.m. and is open to all age groups.  
    Race day registration and number pick up will begin at 9 a.m. The first 30 people to register will receive a race T-shirt.
    Cost is $10 with proceeds benefiting the University’s athletic department.
