Scientists for a day
On Friday, Sept.12, approximately 40 students in grade 6 at Washburn Elementary School will be traveling by private charter bus to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) in Portland.
The students will be participating in Lab Venture!, a state-of-the-art interactive marine science learning experience, which is designed to allow students to explore the Gulf of Maine ecosystem hands-on, using real scientific methods.
The Institute is closely linked to the community, strategically focused on the Gulf of Maine bioregion, and complemented by a unique research interface that engages primary school students and the general public with marine science. Designed to make science more accessible to the general public, the Cohen Center features LabVenture!, which uses technology and a curriculum specifically designed to engage middle school students with cutting-edge marine research. LabVenture! is a two-and-a-half-hour, hands-on learning experience that includes a multimedia group presentation along with free-standing digital kiosks featuring interactive touch screens, an array of scientific tools and large plasma display screens that guide students through a series of research activities.
After their visit, students can retrieve a digital online scrapbook that includes microscope images, team photos and video research reports created during their visit. Teachers will have access to a free online library of standards-aligned learning activities that makes it possible to integrate up to a full year of marine science into their lesson plans.
This is a special program where students in either 5th or 6th grades from every community in Maine have the opportunity to participate in this program free of charge. A mix of statewide and local donors makes this program possible for students in our area.
Support for LabVenture! includes contributions from Charles Edison Fund, Katahdin Trust Company, Maine Mutual Group, Maine Potato Board, Maine State Eagles and Oakhurst Dairy.
