Room to read – Library unveils renovations

HOULTON, Maine — Staff at the Cary Library held a well-attended open house Aug. 26 for the community to celebrate completion of recent renovations to its Children’s Library.

Library Director Linda Faucher introduced Charlie Starkey, whose family has supported the Children’s Library since its original renovation in the early 1990s. He thanked the library staff and trustees, as well as a large number of volunteers, local contractors and suppliers who had helped complete the new improvements, including new tile flooring and oak bookcases and more comfortable seating for parents.
“Libraries everywhere now find themselves competing with the internet and electronic media, and for the Children’s Library this is a special challenge: how can young children still have opportunities to experience books and absorb reading skills, particularly before they enter the school system? Our hope is that by maintaining the Children’s Library as an inviting place for children and parents to experience reading together, it will be possible to keep more of those opportunities available to the Houlton community,” said Starkey.
The trustees of Cary Library also expressed appreciation to Starkey and to the memory of his parents, Earle and Eleanor Starkey, for believing in and investing in the Cary Library.
“It is through the generosity and vision of library donors such as the Starkey family that the Cary Library is able to continue as an important resource to the community while also remaining a comfortable and inviting family environment,” said Library Director Faucher.
