The entire State of Maine was buzzing with anticipation, as Elvis Presley was scheduled to appear for two shows in Portland on August 17 and 18, 1977. As we all know, Elvis never made it to Maine, as he died on August 16, 1977. Today, more than 30 years after his death, Elvis Presley is still one of the most loved and recognized performing artists in the world. Presley’s music, movies, and his life story are as popular today as they have ever been. The buzz is starting to build again in Aroostook County, because on October 4, one of the country’s top Elvis entertainers, Robert Washington, will be on stage at the Caribou Performing Arts Center for a one-night performance, promising an evening of music and fun for all. The “Elvis Comes to Caribou Show will feature two sets, the first focusing on Presley’s younger days, with the second conjuring up a typical Elvis Vegas lounge performance.
The “Elvis Comes to Caribou” show is part of Homecoming Weekend of the Holy Rosary Church in Caribou. Homecoming committee member Richard Ezzy is thrilled that Robert Washington will be part of the weekend. “Not only am I looking forward to the show, but also my parents, who are in their 70s, as well as my kids, ages 6 and 9. The Elvis show will be fun, family entertainment that is ideal for bringing music lovers of all ages together,”
Robert Washington, born in St. Louis, MO. in 1958, became a fan of Elvis Presley at an early age. Following Elvis’ death (on Washington’s birthday in 1977), he began singing Elvis songs for family and friends. In 1983, he entertained on stage for the first time, marking the beginning of his career.
Since then, Washington has performed all over the world. He not only has the voice of Elvis but also that same special charisma. Washington was featured in the movie “Almost Elvis,” and won first place at the 2003 Images of Elvis competition in Memphis, among many other awards. He is a true Elvis fan and it is evident in his performance.
The performance will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, at the Caribou Performing Arts Center. Tickets to the Elvis Comes to Caribou show are $10 for adults and $6 for students and are on sale now in Caribou at the Holy Rosary Rectory, Sleepers, S.W. Collins, and Caribou One Stop; also at Trader Joe’s and S.W. Collins in Presque Isle, and at Ezzy’s Music Shop in Van Buren.
