MARS HILL – Investigation into the stabbing of a local man resulted in Brent Folsom being charged with filing a false report.
On July 3, Maine State Police responded to what was deemed a “suspicious incident” that occurred around 12:30 p.m. on the ATV trail in Mars Hill. “Brent Folsom, 39, of Mars Hill, reported that he had been stabbed while walking on the ATV trail. Folsom was transported by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle,” said Sgt. Tom Pelletier, of the MSP.
Folsom was subsequently treated at the hospital for a non-life-threatening wound and released the following day.
Police continued to investigate the incident. Several troopers and detectives assisted Trooper Rob Flynn, the primary investigator on the case.
On July 9, Pelletier released an update on the case, stating Folsom was being charged in connection with the incident.
“State Police have charged Folsom with filing a false police report as a result of an incident that occurred in Mars Hill on July 3,” said Pelletier.
Pelletier said initially Folsom had contacted 9-1-1, using his cell phone, to report the stabbing.
“Upon arrival, they (responders) found Folsom lying on the ATV trail with a single stab would to the abdomen with a knife,” said Pelletier, “Folsom claimed to have been robbed by two males while walking on the trail.”
Further investigation of the report, according to Pelletier, determined that the incident “had not occurred as reported and that the stabbing was self-inflicted.”
Folsom has been charged with a false public report, a Class D crime. The DA’s Office did not have a court date for Folsom at presstime.
