The Houlton Water Company All-star 11-12-year-old baseball team was eliminated from the District 3 Little League tournament last Wednesday, as Holbrook took an 11-8 victory.
Holbrook staked a 2-0 lead to start the game, but Houlton drove in a run in the bottom of the second on a Kyle Bouchard homer. Holbrook plated five runs in the top of the third, but Houlton answered with just as many runs in the bottom of the frame to trail, 7-6.
Keeping the score within a run, Holbrook scored twice in the top of the fifth, as they held Houlton scoreless to extend their lead, 10-7.
Pacing Houlton’s offense were Gage Hunt, Isaiah Straubel and Nick Guiod all with a double and single.
Last Tuesday at Community Park, the Houlton Water Company All-stars pulled out a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over visiting Brewer to stay alive in the double-elimination event.
Brewer held a 3-1 lead, but Houlton’s Hunter Hanning hit a solo blast over right centerfield to cut the lead to one run in the bottom of the fourth. The Houlton all-stars held Brewer scoreless over the next two innings, setting up a dramatic finish.
With two outs, back-to-back run-scoring hits by Hanning — who doubled to score Hunt with the tying run — and Straubel who singled to score Guiod (who singled twice) with the game-winner helped Houlton escape elimination.
Hanning picked up the win in relief of Straubel.
The Houlton All-stars lost their first game to Lincoln, 3-2. It was a pitcher duel between Straubel and Lincoln’s Tryston Pelkey.
Lincoln scored their first run in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth on an error by Houlton.
Houlton came back in the top of the sixth, as Hanning reaching on an error and J. Tuttle hit a single to score Hanning. Straubel then hit a single to score Tuttle.
Straubel had 10 strikeouts and only three walks.
