HOULTON — Anyone who steps foot outside in Houlton on Friday night is guaranteed to notice an enormous, bright  beam of light in the sky shining toward the stars from the town square.
The Temple Theatre, in downtown Houlton, is planning an exciting night for the highly anticipated release of The Dark Night, the newest, slightly darker than usual, Batman film.
Temple Theatre owner Mike Hurley has planned to have a 60 inch, 650,000 watt search light, compliments of Maine Searchlight Company, pointed upward from town square, attracting all in sight to attend the festivities.
“We’ve done a few things before, but never anything as big as bringing in a search light. This thing is a monster,” said Hurley enthusiastically.
Hurley also encourages the owners of classic cars to stop by, show off their old-school cruisers and grab a free hotdog from Zippy’s.
Zippy’s will remain open throughout the activities, and a late showing of The Dark Night is planned for 9:35 p.m. It has also been said that Batman himself will make an appearance around town and even on a downtown rooftop during this night of fun and mystery.
Although the Temple Theatre has never planned such an extravagant opening night thus far, Hurley hopes for a large turnout in support of the theatre.
“We’ll be having drawings, drawings for free food, all kinds of things. It should be a blast,” explained Hurley.
With the newly opened Zippy’s now sitting beside the theatre serving hot dogs, burgers, and quesadillas, and crowd drawing events, the Temple Theatre’s popularity appears to be rising steadily.
