Washburn couple moves south
Linwood and Alyce Kenney recently made the trek to Rickman, Tenn., to live with their daughter Peggy Sue Kenney and longtime friend Patricia Cardinal. Linwood is looking forward to seeing what the new state will have to offer, and perhaps he’ll either buy a guitar and get involved with Tennessee country music or continue to hone his skills at preaching.
Alyce is just looking forward to a warmer winter climate with lots less snow! This unique pair have been married for over 60 years; and with the gypsy in their souls, they have always been very adaptable to different situations, and their family gave up overly worrying about them years ago.
A good crowd of friends and family helped in the moving day event including: Penny Richardson, Allen and Ian Robertson, Paul Umphrey, Carla Huntington and Peggy Sue Kenney. With all the good packers, the Kenneys got their belongings into a small trailer which was towed by Peggy Sue’s pickup, and the family set of for their first layover in Bangor.
Also during the visit, a group of them enjoyed a special “girl’s night” at the home of Penny Richardson. Those attending included: Wilza Robertson; Carla Huntington, of Boston, who is a longtime friend of hostess Penny Richardson (aka Kenney); and Tennessee sister Peggy Sue Kenney; as well as special guests Daisy Richardson and Isabella Robertson.
The ladies enjoyed their visit, reverting at times to childhood memories and shared giggles and raucous laughter. Peggy Sue spent the night at the quiet and peaceful camp of Hollie Umphrey before driving her parents to their new home; and Carla stayed at the home of Penny and Allen before returning to her home in Boston.

Town Council notes
The members of Washburn’s Town Council held a meeting on Monday, June 30, at 4 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center/Fire Station. The place of the meeting was due to the referendum voting on the SAD 45 annual budget.
There were approximately 16 citizens attending, and the first order of business was the Disposition of Municipal Property Bid Opening. There were six bids received and opened including the following: Kinney Inc. for $80,290, D.C. Farms for $100,001.00, D. McCrum for $85,000.00, Jerry Blackburn for $5,000.00, Hugh Klei for $227,000.00 and Nordic Properties for $225,000.00. The Council was obligated to leave one more day due to an unexpected delivery delay and will announce the winner of the bid at their next Council meeting scheduled for Monday, July 14.
Also during the meeting, the Council voted on the minutes of May 12, and special Council meetings of May 29, June 2 and June 23. They reviewed and approved the financial figures through June 26, 2008.
It was also decided to write in Town Manager Andrea Powers on the Maine Municipal Association Legislative Policy Committee Ballot.
The Council voted to agree to a reappraisal request due to damages, and the town manager made the Council aware of possible industrial wind development coming to the County.
Town Manager Powers also discussed the hours of operation for the Town Office. She discussed a 10-hour a day, four-day work week, explaining some pros and cons of the idea – one pro being a possible 25 percent savings in areas other than insurance and salaries, an issue that will be discussed at the next Council meeting. The Council will consider this and vote during the Monday, July 14, Council meeting.
There were economic matters discussed during executive session. The next scheduled Council meeting will be held at the Civic Center at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 14.
All interested residents are urged to attend.
