100 Years Ago • June 25, 1908
Aroostook Pioneer

    Opening — A large crowd gathered at Crescent Park Friday evening to attend the formal opening of this popular resort.
    A heavy shower settled in about nine o’clock and spoiled the program of sporting events advertised. An effort was made to send off fireworks, but wet surroundings interfered.
    Dancers took possession of the Pavilion and enjoyed themselves with music by Bryson’s Orchestra.

    Smart guy — Don, the 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Cassidy, succeeded in passing the examination for Houlton High School receiving as his average 100 percent. This is a record never before established in the history of the school.

LARGEST SIGN IN AROOSTOOK — Pictured, from left, in front of what was Aroostook’s newest and biggest signboard in 1958 were Kenneth S. Ludden, assistant director of public relations for the Bangor & Aroostook railroad; Herbert Aldrich, vice president of the Association of Aroostook Chamber of Commerce; Carl R. Smith, vice president of the railroad; and F.B. Lunt, regional vice president of sales.  The sign measured 12-by-50 feet.

    Expanding — Construction is continuing on the expansion of the Aroostook County courthouse. Currently, workmen are pouring concrete for the new addition to the Registry of Deeds.

    Name change — Gov. Edmund Muskie and Premier Huge John Fleming of New Brunswick have, in the spirit of international cooperation, been invited by Council Chair Neale Bither to the dedication of Houlton’s municipal airport.
    The ceremony will be made at the International Air Fair July 27 and will be marked by a changing of the name to Houlton International Airport.
    A crowd of 5,000 is expected.

    Good shot — John “Bungy” Byers aced the 110-yeard sixth hole at VaJoWa this week for the first hole-in-one of the season at the Island Falls golf course. John, 12, was playing with friends Brent Dubois and Shawn Curry when he landed the shot.
