The Katahdin Valley Little League Championship was held Saturday in Sherman, with the No. 1 Oakfield Falcons capturing the title, defeating the second-seeded Island Falls Bulldogs, 10-5. Trent Cullinan picked up the win, striking out eight, with Kaleb Burpee coming on in relief in the sixth inning for the winners, while Dylan Porter suffered the loss.
Will McGary went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs to lead Oakfield, while Cullinan had a hit and a run. Cody Lassonde went 2-for-3 with a double and had 2 RBIs; Burpee went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs, while Gage LeFay and Matt Furrow each chipped in with a single and a run scored. Austin White also scored a run for the champions.
The Bulldogs were lead by Porter, who had three hits, including two triples. Also contributing were Cameron Landry and Robbie Rockwell with two singles each. Parker Walker, Derrick Atkinson, Tyler Batchelder and Lucas Violette also chipped in with a hit for the Bulldogs.
In the first game of the tournament, Oakfield defeated the No. 4 Patten Pirates, 7-5, behind the pitching of Lassonde and LeFay, who came on in relief.
For Patten, Andrew Olsen and Jarred Woods combined for the pitching duties.
In the second game, Island Falls overpowered the Sherman Giants 16-6, behind the pitching of Rockwell who had nine strikeouts. The Bulldogs were lead offensively by Walker and Porter, who both went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Also contributing with two hits was Landry. Rockwell and Josh Perrin each had a single, as well.
Sherman was led Caine Patterson, Sal Clukey, Logan Guiggey and Shay Lane each with a hit.
