The halls of the Statehouse house were abuzz one day last month Maine Emergency Medical Services held it’s Annual Emergency Medical Services Awards Ceremony in the Hall of Flags in Augusta. Several Aroostook County individuals and ambulance services were recognized at the State level for their contributions to the EMS system.
Heartsafe Community Awards for 2008 were given to Ambulance Service Inc. of Fort. Kent, Houlton Ambulance, Madawaska Ambulance Service, Island Falls Ambulance, Van Buren Ambulance Service,
Patten Ambulance and Downeast EMS in Danforth.
The designation of these ambulance services is as a result of the extensive community education of CPR and lifesaving cardiac treatment available in the communities served by those services.
In addition, the designation also identifies communities in which public access defibrillators are available in the event of a cardiac emergency.
The Heartsafe designation of all of Aroostook County EMS Services, has been an ongoing goal since the program was created in 2005. With the addition of these services, Aroostook Region 5 is the first region to reach 100 percent compliance in the state.
