McCain Foods, J.M. Huber linked to Bypass

To the editor:
On April 23, Walt Elish, executive director of Leaders Encouraging Aroostook Development (LEAD), presented an update on his organization to the Rotary Club of Caribou. LEAD is a non-profit corporation established for the purpose of “fostering and encouraging the balanced development of Aroostook County.” The meeting was covered by staff of the Aroostook Republican.     Elish, who is also chairman of the Presque Isle City Council, was asked during the meeting about a recent letter to the editor of the Bangor Daily News that questioned whether a bypass should be built around Presque Isle. Elish said he hadn’t read the letter but said that it was “imperative” that the bypass be constructed. “I look at the bigger picture,” Elish said. “I look at the region.”
If either McCain Foods or J.M. Huber Corp. in Easton closed it would have a devastating effect on Presque Isle even though the companies aren’t located in the city, Elish said.
As a concerned citizen, it’s a pleasure to see that McCain Foods, Inc. has finally made its way onto the stage of this public (bypass) debate.
