A local man remained in jail on Tuesday, charged with setting fire to his mother’s trailer home early Monday morning, according to investigators. Brian Monson, 34, of Caribou, was charged with arson, according to Tim Lowell of the Maine State Fire Marshall’s office. No injuries were reported in the fire.
The Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department was notified of the fire at about 2 a.m. on Monday. The 1970 mobile home at the Caribou Trailer park was owned by Sandra Davenport, according to Fire Chief Roy Woods. Davenport’s two sons, Brian and Russell Monson, were living in the trailer, Woods said.
The fire appears suspicious in nature and the case was turned over to the fire marshal’s office for investigation.
Lowell said the fire was started in the central portion of the mobile home. However, he declined to say how the fire was started.
Firefighters responded with two trucks and 20 people pouring 1,000 galloons of water on the structure, which was a total loss due to smoke and water damage, Woods said.
The trailer was insured, Wood said. However, two smoke detectors located in the mobile home were not working, he said.
Also involved in the investigation was the Caribou Police Department.
