Caribou – Jean M. Turner, 86, died January 16, 2008, at Caribou. She was born in Charleston, N.H October 9, 1921, the daughter of Louis and Julia (Rich) Morse.
She was a 1939 graduate of Bangor High School and received her B.A. in nursing from the University of Maine at Orono where she was a member of the Glee Club. She married Philip Turner in 1944 and she and Phil lived in numerous areas of the country while he served with the US Army. They returned to Orono and she continued her nursing career while Philip finished his studies at Orono. Jean taught nursing and worked at the university health center at Amherst College. While Philip attended Michigan State, she continued to teach in Lansing and was also a nurse in Battle Creek.
Jean moved to Caribou in 1960 where she was employed as an RN at local nursing homes and lastly at the Fort Fairfield hospital. She was a member of the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a longtime member of the church choir, a member of the United Methodist Women’s group and served as a lay leader. An avid reader, Jean read over 800 library books plus many other while she and Phil traveled in their motor home. She was a past board member of the Caribou Public Library. Following retirement she loved traveling with Phil in the motor home as well as trips to Alaska, England, Scotland, and Whales.
She is survived by her husband of Caribou as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Turner was predeceased by her sons Peter B., J. Scott and Alex.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008, from the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Anna Beach officiating, assisted by Rev. Lynne Josslyn. Following the service the family invited everyone to visit with them for a time of fellowship and refreshments in the church dinning room. Interment will be in the South Side Cemetery, Mapleton. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mrs. Turner may do so through the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church memorial fund or the Caribou Public Library.
