DARE — The DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program has received a few good boosts recently. For one, Houlton Police Officer Steve Nason recently completed two weeks of training in New Hampshire in order to work as a local DARE instructor. And Monday, while Nason was working with fifth graders at Southside School, the Masonic Lodge of Houlton 96 presented a check for $1,000 in support of DARE. Pictured here, from left, are: front, Southside School students Anthony Allen, Cheyanne Flewelling, Janelle Levesque and Casey Carmichael; back, teacher John Bushey, principal Jason Tarr, Masonic Lodge Junior Deacon Jody Anderson, Nason and Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin. Bushey, who helps with the DARE program at Southside, expressed appreciation to the Masonic Lodge, to the school district and community for their support. The 10-day program, which focuses on fighting drug abuse, doesn’t end at school; support at home also helps make it successful, he added.
