The Houlton High School cheerleaders started their competition season last Saturday, placing third in the Penobscot Valley Conference Small School Championship in Millinocket.
The Houlton team finished with 106.5 points, behind runner-up Orono, who finished just 1.78 points behind first-place Sumner who scored 108.9. Fourth was Dexter with 97.05 and Deer Isle-Stonington capped off the scores with 92.95.
Eleven teams from Class C and D competed in the competition at Stearns High School.
The Lady Shires’ score was attributed to two factors — a fallen stunt and a person missing from the squad on that day.
“We were missing a cheerleader for the competition,” said Houlton Coach Mary Jane Cleary. “We were not able to do the whole pyramid because it takes all 18 cheerleaders for it to work. And, one of the flyers in a shoulder stand fell, as well.”
Points were lost in the first round of the competition when one of Houlton’s back bases, flyer and main base all went to the floor when the flyer lost her balance.
“We have been doing shoulder stands for three years and this is the first time one has come down this way,” Cleary explained. “All three girls composed themselves and finished out the routine.”
In the second round, the Houlton cheerleaders executed their performance.
“Everyone did a great job and they look good,” Cleary said. “The team and their fans were all happy with the performance.”
This Friday night, the Houlton cheerleaders will be competing in their second competition, the Aroostook County Championship at 7 p.m. in Caribou.
“We will be working hard this week to fix things that need to be cleaned up and polished for the competition on Friday,” said Cleary.
The Houlton cheerleaders had only performed their routine twice in front of crowds before last Saturday’s competition.
“We will put the routine on the floor [during this week’s games] and keep practicing for Friday night’s competition,” Cleary added.
