HOULTON — Ask a person what they’re thankful for and see what it means to them — family, food, shelter, loved ones or a job. Any one of these lies at the top of most everyone’s list, but for the elderly people living in Houlton, what they’re most thankful for are volunteers.
The American Legion Post No. 47 and its volunteers served up a free traditional Thanksgiving dinner last Sunday, Nov. 18 feeding hundreds of seniors from throughout the area.
“We served 300 people at the Legion and we made 200 deliveries for people that were unable to get out and we also served the Houlton Police Department, the Maine State Police and the Sheriff’s Department as well,” explained Tammy Acott.
Acott has been volunteering for the annual dinner for the past couple of years and she said what the Legion for those around the community means a great deal.
“A lot of people thank us and appreciate us for doing this,” she said. “Clearance Swimm began this several years ago and it’s just continued to grow and this year was a huge success.”
Volunteers included Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion (SAL), the Ladies Auxiliary and Junior members.
“There are too many names to mention,” she said. “Some people came and got meals to take to their elderly friends or family.
“Most of the food was donated and I’d like to thank the people that donated and volunteered to make this a big success,” Acott said.
