Clement P. Thorne, 79, of Island Falls died Nov. 8, 2007, at his home. He was born June 9, 1928, in Houlton the son of Lester Paul and Arabelle (Bryant) Thorne. Clem was a graduate of Island Falls High School, class of 1944. He was a veteran of W.W. II where he served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Vulcan in 1946-1947, he attended Dunstan University of Prince Edward Island and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1952. He taught school for one year in Calais and worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance from 1953-1984. He was a member of C.L.U., Past Chairman of Presque Isle Country Club, chaired Spudland Golf Tournament, was a former chairman of S.A.D. #1 School Board, was the past President of May Mountain Ski Area, a member of the Elks, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Presque Isle Rotary, Island Falls Lions Club, a past Chairman of Milliken Medical Center, founder of Island Falls IGA, president and director of Vacationland Estates, and was a Republican candidate in 1986 for State Legislature.
He enjoyed golf, the Red Sox, playing cards, hunting, fishing and was a private pilot.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan (Murphy)Thorne of lsland Falls; 7 children, Linda Walton and her husband Jeffery of Presque Isle, Sandra Gendron of South Portland, Thomas Thorne of Brewer, Pamela Thorne of U.S.A., David Thorne of Portland, Debbie Madore and her partner Roland Guimond of Mapleton, James and his wife Suzanne Thorne of Carmel; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and one sister Barbara and her husband Richard Pulkkinen of Millinocket. He was predeased by his parents; one great-grandson, Hunter Twombly; and one nephew, Barry Pulkkinen.
Clem was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed many memories with family and friends at Pratt Cove in Island Falls.
Friends called 2-4 Sunday, November 11, 2007 at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Agnes Catholic Chuch, Island Falls with Father Eddy Morin celebrant. Interment was held in the St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery.
