SECOND DONATION – Robert Askren, left, vice president of the Houlton Federal Credit Union presents the second $1,000 check to Dallas Moore and Megan McLaughlin to help with the Houlton Elementary School Playground Equipment Fund. The Houlton Federal Credit Union had given another $1,000 check earlier to the playground fund.
Local sponsors contributed $350 to meet the matching grant requirement. These funds were generously raised and donated by Katahdin Club of Island Falls. The Katahdin Club has been a major support of the library since 1934 when the library was established for the town. Katahdin Club members serve on the board of the library and several of the past librarians have come from the group.
Librarian Rebecca Drew and trustee Patricia Prescott are choosing books from the lists sent by the Libri Foundation. Two age categories are available, preschool-grade 2 and grades 3, 4, and 5. Selection will be made by years’ end and the books will become part of the library as they are received.
Drew says, “The grant will enable us to increase the quality and quantity of books for these age groups. Many of the children’s books we have are very old and need to be discarded and these will replace those for a more attractive and relevant reading experience for the children. This comes at a great time for us as we are in the process of building an addition to our library for use as a children’s area.”
