Houlton Rec to open building for season
    The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will be opening for the season on Tuesday, Oct. 9.     Below are some of the activities being sponsored by the department.     For more information call the recreation department at 532-1310.
Walking is held from 10a.m. to 1 p.m., starting Tuesday, Oct. 9. This will be available Monday through Friday throughout the winter months. Please bring or wear sneakers. Free to all.
    Open Gym and game room for grades 2-6: Daily 3 – 5 p.m., along with Saturday and Sunday, 1-4 p.m.
    Open Gym and game room for grades 7-12: Daily 3-5 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 6-8 p.m., along with Saturday and Sunday, 1-4 p.m.
    After School Fun Program for grades K-4 each Tuesday and Thursday from 3-4:30 p.m. The program will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 9. This program will run for eight weeks and is filled with games, crafts, contests and more. SAD 29 children may travel to the recreational center on their school bus.  Cost for one day is $25 for Houlton residents and $38 for non-Houlton residents. Cost for the two-day program is $50 for Houlton residents and $75 for non-Houlton residents. This program is limited to 15 youth per day.     Parent & Tot Time will be held each Tuesday and Thursday from 9-10:30 a.m. Parents and tots are welcome to this unstructured playtime that gives parents and tots the opportunity to meet new friends.  Some toys will be provided and you are welcome to bring your own. Free to all that participate.
    Early Release Day Program will be held for children in the SAD 29 school system. This program will allow youngsters to attend the Houlton recreation program from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on those early release days from school.  
    Children will be broken into two age groups – grades K-3 and grades 4-6. A schedule of activities has been developed and snack will be provided each day. Each age group is limited to 20 children and registration is required. Cost is $5 for Houlton residents and $7.50 for non-Houlton residents per child per day. Early Release Days for SAD 29 are Oct. 17, Jan. 16, March 19, April 9 and May 14. To register your child, call the Houlton Recreation Department at 532-1310 by Oct. 12.
    Adult Open Gym will start on Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 7:30-9 p.m. at the rec center. No high school-age individuals allowed. Cost is $2 per person per night. Adult open gym will be held on Monday and Wednesday nights.
General Information:
    * Children must be in grades 2-12 to stay at the center. Any child grade one or younger must be accompanied by an adult to be at the recreation center during open gym and game room hours.
    * Any youth in grade 6 or younger must be accompanied by an adult to be at the recreation center past 5p.m., unless he/she is attending a scheduled practice of activity.
    * Parents will be notified if a youth is asked to leave the recreation center due to bad or inappropriate behavior.
    * Season passes are available for youth. Cost is $15 for Houlton residents and $22.50 for non-Houlton residents. The pass entitles youth to use the ping-pong and pool tables throughout the open season. If youth do not have a pass, the price for the use of the tables is 50 cents for a 15-minute period.
