Monticello man recalls life-changing accident

MONTICELLO — “I went to work in Houlton on Christmas Eve and awoke in Boston at Mass General on Christmas morning,” said Calvin Brewer.     Calvin Brewer is thankful to be alive. Brewer lost his left arm up to his bicep in a tragic accident at work on Christmas Eve 2005. Without the First Aid training he received as a Boy Scout, the quick thinking of his co-workers at Louisiana Pacific and many Red Cross blood donors, he would not be with us today.
Brewer is not sure exactly how many units of blood he received, but he is extremely thankful they were available when he needed it.
Brewer’s recovery is nothing short of miraculous! His father put him to work this summer throwing bales of hay and he rejoined his softball team to achieve a batting average of 585. He also returned to work and is training to be a shift supervisor.
Those who give blood help patients like Brewer every day.  All are encouraged to donate blood and talk to others to giving the “Gift of Life.”
