HOULTON, Maine — The Barbara London Trio will be at the Unitarian Church, 61 Military St., on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door and $10 for seniors. Advance tickets can be purchased at Visions shop and York’s Bookstore in Houlton. Barbara London is a nationally known jazz flutist, composer, pianist and vocalist who grew up in Houlton. She has produced and released a number of recordings featuring her jazz quartet and original compositions and is currently working on a new release. She has performed at the Kansas City Women’s Jazz Festival, the Newport Jazz Festival (NYC), Carnegie Recital Hall, Lincoln Center Plaza, and at numerous festivals, colleges, and clubs across the country. She has appeared with such respected artists as Marian McPartland, Richard Davis, Clark Terry, Joe Newman, and Phil Wilson, and with Charlie Jennison, John Perrault and Jim MacDougall. London also performs with the Funky Divas of Gospel.
London taught at Berklee College of Music in Boston for nearly twenty years and became the first female chair of the Harmony Department at Berklee in 1994. She has written workbooks and co-created a course on the blues with Bruce Katz. The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded her three jazz performance grants. All are invited to come welcome Barbara back to the County on Oct. 6.
This event is part of the Houlton Bicentennial Celebration and the Unitarian Concert Series. Refreshments will be available during intermission along with artwork and recordings by Barbara.
