Oakfield Senior Citizens
By Charlotte Marley

Twenty-nine members and two guests met at the Smoki-Haulers Snowmobile Club on Wednesday Sept. 19 for their second meeting of the month. There was much activity going on outside the building repairing the parking lot and moving the ramp in preparation for winter.     September is Shingles month so there was lots of information about the disease Shingles available to be picked up and taken home to be read. This information will be at the Oakfield Community Center for the rest of the month. Be sure to check out these brochures.
Mystery gift winners this week were: Gini Garrett, Marie Gillotti, and Bunny Stewart.
After the blessing a delicious potluck dinner was enjoyed by all.
Bob Locke called the meeting to order followed by the Lord’s Prayer and Flag Salute. The card report, treasure’s report and secretary’s reports were all read and accepted.
There won’t be a meeting on the first Wednesday of October as we will be going on our trip to Bar Harbor on Oct. 6, 2007 leaving from the Oakfield Community Center at 8 a.m. Be sure to keep this date marked on your calendar.

Take Off Pounds 233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, Sept. 21 meeting.
Leader Kay Grass led the meeting. Attending were 18 people — 13 TOPS and five KOPS.
Loser of the week was Kathy Hutchinson with Joan Simpson and Lois Downing as runners-up.
The mystery gift was won by Gerry McAfee; 50/50 went to Lois Downing and the skinny dish was held over.
Charlotte Marley led us in the “Tooty ta ta” dance. Betty Ivey will add to it for the next meeting.
Some of the meeting was taken up discussing an item for the fall rally, to be in Brewer Oct. 6. Its theme is “Make your own music.”
Denise Kinney, in charge of contests, said it is going very well. There are nine persons “in the boat.”
Lois Downing read a list of Christian one-liners. Kathy Hutchinson told how food affected us, as stated by Dr. Oz on the TV show “Oprah” recently.
Charlotte directed the program. She presented us with an exercise book; they were provided by  the National Institute on Aging and reprinted in April of 2007. The book contains self-tests, benefits and nutrition.`
Before we ended for the week Janette Nelson read an “Allegiance to myself,” written by Charlotte.
The next meeting is Sept. 28 at the same location. The meeting starts at 9  a.m.
clock with weigh-in at 8-8:45 a.m.

Everyone is welcome.

Ricker Rumblings
By Lois Downing

Fallish this morning but isn’t the changing of the leaves beautiful. What better place to see the autumn foliage than in Maine! We are so lucky. Thank you, Lord.
We have two new tenants, both males. Paul Armstrong is on the first floor and Russell Socoby on the third. May your stay at Ricker Plaza be a long and happy one for both.
Dot Armstrong, well known in this area and now of Portland, fell and broke her hip, as reported in last week’s column. Dot was in a rehabilitation facility, the last I knew. Those who want to send a card may do so at 444 Stevens Ave., Portland, ME 04103.
Elinor Schenk has been under the weather lately. She is better now.
Dean Richardson has had a few “walks” lately. Better get them all in before the cold weather, Dean.
Houlton Council of Catholic Women will hold its annual sale in the parish hall starting Thursday, Oct. 4 and continuing the next two days. The Council is known throughout many areas as being the “best.” Come and enjoy.
Leigh and Sylvia Cummings, frequent diners in the community room, have been celebrating 60 years of married life. Congratulations to this busy and happy couple.
Inez Scott’s mother was 87 at the time of her death, not 83 as reported by me in the last column. Sorry about that!
Charlene Henderson, our liaison, distributed questionnaires a few days ago; the subject was cigarettes and the self-addressed forms went to Healthy Portland. The forms were easy to fill out and many did so.
Brian and Charlene’s family are working on the harvest; we miss them around the plaza. They are always good workers and friendly too.
Yvonne Blake, well known in our community for her baking as well as other talents, broke her toe. If you want to send her a card she is at Lee Apartments No. 16, Houlton.
Marion Donovan was a visitor in the community room this past week partaking of the Meals on Wheels. Welcome back, Marion, and come again soon.
The Bingo ladies will soon be starting up again. We took a break this summer. Please watch for a notice.
Lester Burns, third floor tenant, baked some “special potatoes” but they only went to the males in the building. Now, I ask you Lester, is that fair? Just kidding. Lester loves to cook, as a lot of men do,  and was a former chef.
My thought for the day is taken from the Bible, John 14: 2-3, “There are many homes up there where my Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming. When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be with me…”
Have a pleasant week.

Plans were set for the fall outing on Oct. 8 to leave by special bus. We will meet at Kelley’s Shell Gas Station (near the Interstate 95 intersection) at 9 a.m. to travel to Eagle Lake for a noon meal. It will be a spectacular ride both ways as the leaves should be at their colorful peak.
We will have our regular meeting, with potluck lunch, on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the Sherman gym at noon.
