MAPLETON – Roland E. Garland, 85, passed away August 23, 2007 at the Maine Veterans Home in Caribou. He was born January 3, 1922 in Presque Isle, the son of Floyd E. and Ruth (Higgins) Garland.
Roland graduated from Presque Isle High School and attended the Normal School Teacher’s College in Presque Isle. He entered the U.S. Navy and served his country during WWII spending two and a half out of three years in the South Pacific. After his discharge he operated the family business, Garland’s Auto Electric Service for many years until his retirement.
Roland liked the outdoors and enjoyed many years of gardening, raising animals and walking. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout of Troop 171 in Presque Isle. Roland and his wife Joan were avid square dancers for thirty five years, holding many offices and acquiring lots of friends. They bowled together and also in later years Roland enjoyed many good times playing golf.
Roland is survived by his wife of sixty years, Joan Adams Garland; three sons, Woodford and Ann Garland of Mapleton, and their family Laurie and Scott Amero and their daughter Katelyn of Mapleton; Paige Gagnon and her sons Justin and Alec of Eddington; Craig Garland of Portland; Stephen and Connie Garland of Provo, UT and his daughter Moriah Garland of Georgia; William and Ann Garland of Eliot and their sons Kevin of Massachusetts, and Ryan of Orono; and one special daughter Donna Jean, who was the apple of his eye. He also leaves his brother Fernald Garland and his wife Hazel of Chapman, and many cousins and nieces and nephews. He will be missed by a good friend and golfing buddy Don Hanning of Mapleton. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brother Floyd (Woodie) Garland and a baby sister Ruth Gene.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 P.M. on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at the Mapleton Methodist Church with the Rev. Dot Matson officiating. Friends called from 2 P.M. until the time of the service at the church. A reception followed at the fellowship hall. A committal service took place after the reception at Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle. Donations may be made in Roland’s memory to CAARC, 25 Lombard St. Presque Isle, ME 04769.
