The second annual Presque Isle Rotary Club Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Presque Isle Country Club. In conjunction with the tournament, a dinner will be held that evening for Rotarians and their guests, both golfers and non-golfers. The meal will feature roasted sirloin of beef and baked ham. Catering will be by Rotarian Scott Carlin. Cost is $15 per person. All profits from the meal will be donated back to the club. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., followed by the program. The City of Presque Isle has asked the PI Rotary Club if members would be interested in participating in the “Adopt-a-Highway” program. The city has designated specific sections of roadways leading into the community that seem to be high litter areas. We would select an area and be responsible for litter control duties at least twice a year for a two year period. The Club would get a sign on our stretch of highway noting our participation.
Three Rotarians gave their classification speeches during the Aug. 6 meeting. Jay Trainer, Derik Smith and Marcia Hartt did a terrific job according to President Joe Clukey.
This topic of the July 30 meeting was the Music Festival at the Northern Maine Fair. Rotarian Kevin McCartney explained that this is the third year of the festival. They have a different genre of music all nine nights of the Fair and are very excited about the local performers that will take center stage.
McCartney then introduced the Wednesday Evening Fiddlers from Perth Andover, N.B. They entertained the club with their excellent renditions of several songs and even amazed the audience with a dance performance! A member of the Swedish Meatballs then performed an excellent rendition of an old Swedish walking song on her fiddle.
McCartney encouraged everyone to go to the Fair and enjoy these fine local musicians. In order to represent all the different types of musical genres, he closed his presentation with a rap song detailing the highlights of the Northern Maine Fair!
A Rotary Auction Kick-Off was the subject of the July 23 meeting. Rotarian Bob Grove-Markwood prepared an excellent slide show on last year’s auction. Vice President/Auction Co-Chair Alton Hartt then informed members that the auction solicitation sheets are now ready to be handed out. Each Rotarian went over and selected solicitation sheets. The sheets are due back by Aug. 27 after Rotarians have visited their assigned businesses in the community.
All sheets must be returned whether or not auction item donations have been made. In addition, Rotarian are to make the appropriate changes to the contact information on the sheets. The 60th annual Presque Isle Rotary Auction is Nov. 27-29.
For more information or to make a donation for the charity auction, contact Auction Co-Chairs Hartt at 764-4481 or Jayne Towle at 769-2900.
