Perham recycling event
The week of July 23 through July 28 has been designated as Clean Up Perham Week. The current schedule is for free pickup as follows: On Monday, July 23 – computers, TVs, etc. Washers and Dryers will be picked up on Tuesday, July 24; and metal items on Wednesday, July 25.
Tires and batteries will be picked up on Thursday, July 26, with everything else picked up on Friday, July 27. Please put all items each day out by the road. For those needing special assistance, please contact the Perham Town Office at 455-5887 during regular hours Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Fridays and holidays. There will also be someone available all week to pick up junk vehicles by contacting Fred Bonville at 764-0165 or 227-7297.
On Saturday, July 28, a workshop will be held at the Perham Town Office from 10 a.m. to noon. This is the Barb Goodyear annual Recycling and Composting Workshop and will include lots of information on recycling of lots of different materials. The Perham Ladies will have hotdogs, drinks, books, hats and T-shirts on sale.
In conjunction with this special day-long event, the Perham residents are being notified of two household hazardous waste collection days, sponsored by NMDC. They will be held on Saturday, August 18, in Presque Isle, and Saturday, August 25, in Houlton. Residents may participate for free, but pre-registration prior to July 27 with NMDC is mandatory, and you must bring your permit with you on the day of the event. There will be a special election to fill a vacated seat on the Board of Selectmen. The election will be held on Thursday, August 2, and voting polls will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. Anyone having nomination papers out for this election must have them returned to the Perham Town Office by Thursday, July 19.

Town Council minutes
The Washburn Town Council held their regular meeting on Monday, July 9, at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. The Council reviewed and approved the minutes from the June 18 Council meeting as well as the financial figures through June 30.
Included in the agenda was the appointment of George Howe as the alternate Code Enforcement Officer/LPI.
The Council authorized and signed off on the Maine Department of Transportation Urban Rural Initiative Program Certification for the 2007-2008 year, reviewed information from Maine Public Service regarding tree and brush maintenance and reviewed the 2008 projected Municipal Revenue Sharing figures.
The Council members were made aware of the results of Washburn Water Company’s 2006 Consumer Confidence Report, which is required by the Public Utilities Commission. It was suggested that Radon testing should be done by area homeowners, and the town manager will be working towards accomplishing this through the Community Health Program that is ongoing.
The Council also reviewed the Assessment Warrant and payment schedule from SAD 45 and noted that there is now a good working relationship between the school and the town, which will serve to benefit both the students and taxpayers of Washburn. The Council is considering a variety of ways to keep the mil rate at 25 mils with no increase this year. There will be a special Council meeting on Monday, July 23, with the time to be announced, at the Civic Center to set the new municipal budget. All interested residents are urged to attend.
Town Manager Andrea Powers is currently working with officials to have cell phone reception for the Washburn area. The town is also talking with several buyers for land and equipment from newly acquired property.
It was noted that all projects ranging from the Mill Pond to a Healthy Community are projected to be online for Washburn’s 150-year bicentennial in 2011.

 Benefit scrapbooking event
There will be a scrapbooking open house held on Thursday, July 19, at the Washburn Trailrunners Clubhouse at 48 Station Road in Washburn from 5 to 9 p.m.
All proceeds from this event will go to the Palmer family for Amber Palmer. Amber is a 2007 Washburn graduate who is battling Hodgkins lymphoma cancer.
The Mystery Hostess featuring Close to My Heart with orders of $20 or more prior to shipping and handling and taxes, enter to win.
Available for purchase will be Page and Card Kits, half and half tickets, homemade baked goods and door prizes.

Coming events/reminders
The Washburn Pentecostal Church and the Washburn First Baptist Church will be combining to hold several joint open-air services in the Town Park on Main Street. The special Wednesday night services will be held on July 18 and 25, starting at 6 p.m. and includes music along with Pastor Bruce Blakney and Clark Jalbert sharing the message times.
Tuesdays are Bingo nights at the Trail Runners clubhouse starting at 7 p.m. The games are open to those ages 16 and older, and there is one set up fee of $12 for an evening’s worth of fun. Snacks will also be available for purchase.
The next scheduled meeting of the Oscar Dow Post 48 of the American Legion will meet at 7 p.m. at the lodge building on Berce Street on Tuesday, July 17. New members are always welcome.
Members of the TOPS (Take Off  Pounds Sensibly) group in Washburn meet each Monday at the Washburn Trail Runners at the cost $24 per year and $1 per week. For further information, contact Kathi Plante at 455-8320 or Birdina Cochran at 455-8353.
The Washburn Memorial Library Board of Trustees will hold their next scheduled meeting on Wednesday, July 18, at 7 p.m. at the library. This meeting is open to the public and interested residents are urged to attend.
The next scheduled story time for the Washburn Memorial Library will be on Monday, July 23, at 5:30 p.m. and the theme will be Solve It.
American Legion members of Post 48 have lots of raffle tickets to sell, and the prizes are great. One is a hand-made queen-size quilt with two pillows, a home-crocheted granny afghan and a hunting knife. Tickets are $5 each and available from any Legion member. The winning tickets will be drawn on Tuesday, July 24.
The Wade Natural Resource Committee will hold a meeting on Wednesday, July 18, at 7 p.m. at the library.
There will be a scrapbooking class for beginners on Wednesday, July 25, at 6 p.m.
The Middle School Book Group meeting will be held on Monday, July 30, at 5 p.m.

Rec Center notes
There will be co-ed softball at the high school baseball field on Thursdays at 6 p.m. Anyone age 18 or older is eligible, and if you want to be on the team, just come to the field. This program will run Thursdays as long as there is interest for it.
On Thursday nights at 6 p.m., there will be co-ed soccer for high school students at the boy’s soccer field.
Each Tuesday and Thursday evenings there will be Minor League Baseball for ages 7 to 9, and each Monday and Wednesday evenings there will be Major League Baseball for ages 10-12.
On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons there will be Junior Softball for girls, ages 9-12. Practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays.
On Monday and Wednesday afternoons, Pony League Baseball for boys ages 13-16 will be played in Presque Isle or Fort Fairfield.
There will be basketball the week of Monday, July 16 through Thursday, July 19. Grades K-2 play from 8 to 9 a.m., grades 3-4 have the court from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. and grades 5-8 play from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Arts and crafts begin on Monday, July 23, and go through Thursday, July 26, at the Rec Center. Grades K-2 work from 8-9, grades 3-4 go from 9:15 to 10:15 and grades 5-8 will be working from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The Fun Day outing on Friday, July 20, will be swimming at Portage Lake. The van will leave the Rec Center at 10 a.m. and return at 2:30 p.m. Each child will need to bring their own lunch, bathing suit, towel, sunscreen and beach related toys.
On Wednesday, July 18, the Major League team plays at Limestone at 5:30 p.m., and on Thursday, July 19, the Minor League team plays Easton at 5:30 p.m.
On Monday, July 23, there will be swimming lessons in Presque Isle from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be a Major League playoffs at 5:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, July 24, the Junior Girls team plays Limestone at 1 p.m.
Plan ahead for an exciting Friday Field Trip Day on July 20. It will be a busy barbecue held at Thomas Brewer Memorial Park for everyone who participated in the summer programs. This promises to be a fun end of the summer events, with a ‘Survivor’ theme to the games and features some good cooking with hot dogs on the grill.
Three Washburn athletes took part in the recent Hershey Track and Field Events in Caribou and the State Hershey Track and Field competition in Brewer.  Carsyn Koch, Zach Davis and Angie Hernandez won places in the events ranging from 50, 100 and 400 meter dashes, an 800 meter run, a 4X100 relaying, a standing long jump and the softball throw.
In the Caribou events, Carsyn Koch won first place in the 200 meter dash, took third place in the 100 meter dash and second place in the standing long jump.
Angie Hernandez won second place in the standing long jump and brought home the third-place ribbon in the 100 meter dash.
Zach Davis took third place in the 800 meter dash and came in second place in the standing long jump.
The trio made the trip to the State Hershey Track and Field events held in Brewer, earning the following:
Carsyn Koch came in second place at the 200 meter dash, first place in the 100 meter dash and second place at the standing long Jump event.
Angie Hernandez won second place in the standing long jump and took home the third-place honors in the 100 meter dash.
Zach Davis placed fourth in both the standing long jump and the 100 meter dash.
Congratulations go to all three of these individuals who represented their hometown of Washburn admirably.

Girl Scout news
The Abnaki Girl Scout Council will be holding some special fun events called Daisy Days. To register, phone Penny Kern at 764-7945 or e-mail her at pkern@abnakigsc.org The next scheduled Daisy Day dates are Monday, July 23, for Exploring the Woods and will include hiking and making hiking food, a scavenger hunt and nature crafts. On Monday, July 30, the theme is Science Around Us, and the girls will be doing outdoor science experiments including nature printing, tie dying with natural dyes and some outdoor cooking.

Library bookmarks
Garfield’s Birthday was the theme of the June 18 story time at the Washburn Memorial Library. Librarian Kathy Corey gave the children some background on Garfield’s birthday including the fact that he was born in the kitchen of Mama Leone’s Italian Restaurant.
Peggy Bugbee read the book “Garfield in Space,” Karen Tompkins read “Garfield: Book of the Seasons,” and Elizabeth Espling read “Garfield: A to Z  Zoo.”
Those attending enjoyed a cake made by Ardis Humphrey and some ice cream. They were each given a Garfield book bag with bookmark and coloring pages inside.
Those winning door prizes included: Jenica Harris, Nick Doody, Cody Anderson, Scott Flood Mykayla Espling, Desiraie Rediker and Valerie Flood.
The July 9 library story time theme was Detect It, and after a discussion of what each child was doing this summer, the ‘mysterious event’ began. Janet Peary read “The Missing Mitten Mystery,” Liz Espling read “The Bear Detectives: the Case of the Missing Pumpkin” and they all enjoyed “The Bearenstain Bears and the Missing Honey.”
The participants each received activity sheets to take home, complete and bring back to the library. The child could put their fingerprints on one of the pages, and the other was a coloring page.
Those winning door prizes were: Victoria Savoy, Virginia Farley, Hannah Dow, Scott Flood, Skylar Mette, Rebecca Savoy and Valerie Flood.

The Washburn Memorial Library has been sponsoring its annual Summer Reading Program, and this year’s theme is Get a Clue @ Your Library, and registration forms can be picked up at the library.
The readers commit to a certain number of hours of reading, with a two-hour minimum required to complete the program. At the end of the program the two readers completing the most hours wins the grand prize, and the library will be taking students to the Discovery Museum in Bangor. The trip will be on August 7 and there will be a chance for 15 winners to go along. The requirements include reading at least two hours, attending one of the programs and completing eight items of an activity page. The deadline for this is Friday, July 27.
Some of the incentive prizes also include: finger cuffs, bookmarks, pencils, stickers, buttons and food prizes. For further information, contact the library at 455-4814 or just stop in.
