Boy Scout events
Members of Washburn’s Boy Scout Troop 177 were offered the opportunity to sell hotdogs, soda and chips during Gagnon’s Auto open house and car show in June. The boys handled the sales, doing a huge business. When the total sales were recorded at the end of the event, Gagnon’s Auto sales owner Garry Gagnon generously doubled the proceeds for the troop as well as donating all the food and supplies, making this a total-profit fund-raiser for the troop. These funds were used towards the troop’s visit to Katahdin Scout Reservation. Participating: Adam Wilcox, David Roy, Bryan Schurman, Curtis Thompson, Jacob Reed, Steven Kinney, Keagan Page, Nicholas Gumprecht, Josh Flagg and Scout leaders Larry Harrison, Ron Rand, Don Wilcox, Gregg Page and Pam Wilcox.
Boy Scout summer camp
Members of Boy Scout Troop 177 traveled to Katahdin Scout Reservation in East Eddington recently. The troop enjoyed a great week of scouting and advancement as well as making several new friends. The Washburn troop shared their campsite, Twin Rocks, with Troop 100 from Dover Foxcroft. During the week the boys earned Honor Troop, third place in the camp-wide events, third place in the Friday ‘Pamola Relay’ competition and Keagan Page wooed his way to become King Neptune for the evening. This is the third straight year a Washburn Scout has received this honor. On the trip home the boys stopped at the Cole Land Transportation Museum, touring the facility and were able to see some items donated to the WWII exhibit by Herman Carmen, grandfather of Keagan Page. Other Washburn folks at camp were David Roy working in the new scout program and Kent Corey working as program director as well as longtime Scout Reservation ‘Ranger’ Paul Thompson, formerly of Washburn.
During the week the adults worked on new Adirondacks shelters in the Quill Hollow campsite. Those attending camp were: Adam Wilcox, Jared Reed, Jacob Reed, Andrew White, Steven Kinney, Curtis Thompson, Josh Flagg, Keagan Page and Nicholas Gumprecht. Leaders were Larry Harrison, Ron Rand, Don Wilcox and Gregg Page.

Celebrating retirement
Larry Harrison has recently returned from Beverley, Mass., where he attended a special retirement ceremony for Steven Crowley. Crowley retired at the rank of master sergeant and he was a recruiter for the New England region. He served with Larry in the Air Force when they were both stationed at Loring in the 1980s. Both were members of the honor guard as well. Crowley’s career spanned 23 years. Several years ago, when Larry retired after a 20-year career, Crowley and his wife Sue traveled from Missouri to celebrate with Larry. The Crowleys have two children, Steven Jr., and Carolyn who is also a special godchild of Larry and Linda Harrison. Larry enjoyed the visit, staying for three days at the Crowley home visiting with lots of friends and family, renewing old ties. On his way home, he stopped in Portland to see his daughter Cheryl and grandchildren Nikole and Gage Herring. Coincidently, it was Gage’s fifth birthday and he was happy to spend it with Grampy. Harrison drove back as far as Bangor and met the Washburn Boy Scouts there before traveling on to Eddington and a week at the Katahdin Scout Reservation.
Flag-burning ceremony
On Monday, July 16, there will be a flag-burning ceremony at the American Legion in Caribou. The time is 6 p.m. and place is the parking lot behind the Legion building on Sweden Street. Scouts are invited to attend.
