Special to The Star-Herald
Summer is here and that means VACATION! But what will you do with the dog? How about bringing him with you? What a great idea, but not without proper preparation. Please consider the following tips from the ASPCA before you travel.
• Make sure your pet’s collar has an ID tag with your home address, along with a temporary travel tag with your cell phone, destination phone number, and any other relevant contact information.
• Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can quickly become a furnace.
• Always bring plenty of plastic jugs filled with bottled or tap water from home. Drinking water she’s not used to could upset your pet’s stomach.
• Don’t forget to bring along your pet’s rabies vaccination record, as some states require proof at certain interstate crossings.
Proper planning can make the difference between a great vacation with your pet and disaster! It is important to plan ahead and to even take identifying pictures of your dog with you.
If you can’t bring your pet along, make a reservation to board your pet or call a pet sitter in advance and be sure your pet has had the required vaccinations. Visit the kennel or meet with the sitter to be sure you will be comfortable with where your pet will be staying and how it will be cared for. If you don’t feel comfortable, take your pet elsewhere, go with your gut and know that your pet’s happiness depends on your decision as to where to board or who you have watching them.
