PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – A local woman is facing a number of charges, including arson, following an incident on Mechanic Street on June 9.
At approximately 9:48 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, the Presque Isle Police Department responded to a call from a Mechanic Street resident. The man reported a female was trying to set fire to his house. According to Det. Sgt. Wayne Selfridge, the man confronted the intruder who summarily assaulted his 14-year-old daughter who was accompanying the father.
“Officers Kevin Schumacher and Bradley Fitzgerald responded and arrested 42-year-old Cinderella ‘Cindy’ Garvey for aggravated attempted murder, arson, terrorizing and assault,” said Selfridge.
Selfridge said seven people were in the home at the time, including two children.
The home’s occupant is credited with extinguishing the fire.
“The home’s occupant heard a noise on the porch and discovered Garvey lighting his porch on fire by pouring lighter fluid on the house next to a wicking material. He put the fire out,” said Selfridge. “Garvey then punched the young teen when they (father and daughter) attempted to restrain her for police.”
Garvey was arrested at the scene. Evidence collected at the scene indicated Garvey had a motive.
“Physical and testimonial evidence obtained by Officer Schumacher during his investigation revealed that her (Garvey’s) motive was to cause the death of the inhabitants for an imagined grievance. Just the two adult residents, with only a passing level of prior contact, barely knew of Garvey,” said Selfridge.
Garvey was unable to make the initial $15,000 cash or $80,000 surety bail, according to Selfridge, and was transported to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton. She was arraigned in Presque Isle District Court on Monday, June 11. Still unable to make bail, Garvey remains incarcerated.
No court date was available at press time.
