Keeping up the tradition, Presque Isle and its residents seemed to make out very well as people packed the streets. The city was filled with buyers, sellers, and lots of traffic over the June 2-3 weekend for their annual City-Wide Yard Sale. Cars could barely drive through some streets, as most sales attracted many curious lookers.
You could find makeup to skis to bookshelves and books all over the city. Some people were selling so low, they were cleaning out their garages. Some people obviously saved up over the year to sell some bargains, like at Dot Lavway’s sale, where one could find jewelry, clothes, kitchen items, and more. She filled her yard and garages with her and her friends items to sell. Her yard was filled with people looking for a bargain. There did not seem to be any hurt feelings, as people grabbed up items.
The weather was perfect for the sales, warm and sunny. Nora Pangburn and her son, Jacob, enjoyed the shade at their yard sale.
The Cushmans repeated their tradition of selling out of their large commercial garage on Maple St, selling makeup, prom dresses, shoes and all kinds more. One unnamed woman said, “Our husbands said it has to sell!” Most of it surely must have, as there were some great bargains to be had there. This writer bought a long, wool jacket for only $3, or was it $4, either way, a great deal.
Some sellers obviously wanted to unload their stuff that started to fill their attics and garages, and others seemed more hesitant, as their sales were not the best bargains. It is hard to say if they were ready to part with their belongings. But there were still some couches, chairs, bookshelves selling. One woman loaded up a large wooden box into the back of her truck.
The city-wide event also drew a lot of people from across the border. Some New Brunswick residents filled up their cars with good deals to take back to Canada.
The final numbers are not in yet on how much Presque Isle residents made, but whatever the numbers, it was a great deal for everyone.
