The Northern Sub-District meeting of The United Methodist Women recently was held at the Mapleton United Methodist Church on April 18 with 47 ladies attending. The meeting opened at 9:30 a.m. with registration and fellowship. President Donna Brewer, of Mars Hill, gave the call-to-order and the welcome was given by Dawn Kenney, president of the Mapleton unit, with the response from Donna Brewer, of Mars Hill. Muriel Johnson, of Presque Isle, who also had the roll call, read the secretary and treasurer’s reports. Northern District President Peggy Swett, of Bangor, was in attendance and gave her report.
All the ladies were asked to bring useful items for the homeless shelter in Presque Isle, and they filled two large tables with quilts, blankets, sheets, towels, toiletry items and much more.
A silent auction was held and the money raised went to the Sub-District for expenses. After a noon luncheon, the guest speakers for the afternoon session were Marilyn Wheeler and Betty Walker, of Presque Isle. They had both attended the United Methodist Women’s Assembly in Anaheim, Cali this past summer and had many interesting stories to tell and also showed slides of their trip. The collection taken will go for Church World Service Love Kits. Caroline Ballerstein showed samples of health, baby and school kits. Joan Walsh, pianist, and Diane Ketchum, organist, of Mars Hill, entertained the group by presenting “Music and History of Hymns.” All joined in singing old and new favorites. The meeting adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
