Methodist women meet
The Easton United Methodist Women met at the church dining room on Wednesday, May 9, with eight members present. Marie Hewitt lead the devotions and the word for the month was ‘trouble.’ A prayer list was compiled. After the report of Secretary Marjorie Corey and the treasurer’s report by Marie Hewitt, President Eldora Carter read communications.
An invitation was read from the United Methodist Women of the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church to join them for their annual Fellowship Tea on Tuesday, May 22, at 7 p.m. The program will be the Presque Isle Community Players performing excerpts from “The Music Man.”
A thank-you was read from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for a donation. The group was reminded of the Resurrection Women spiritual retreat to be held in Cape Elizabeth on May 18 and 20. They were informed that they were a five-star unit for this year.
Vice President Freda Dionne reported that she had two large quilts for sale and six crib-sized ones. Eldora reported that she had received several bags of clothes from Eloise Summers and an offer to help tack quilts if she could be of help. We thank her. The group made 21 visitations.
It was decided that the unit would replace the tree on the front lawn of the church that was planted in memory of Wilda Wathen and was destroyed by vandals and that another tree or bush would be purchased to be planted in memory of Helen Todd. This was left up to the discretion of the president.
A sum of money was voted to be sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to help tornado victims. A letter was also read from Joanne Worthen, who is the new Northern District UMW treasurer, introducing herself. The Red Glove project being carried out by the Limestone UMW was read and explained. There was also a suggestion that members might be interested in making up Shoe Box Bundles of Joy for the Feed The Children organization. These would be shoe boxes with items for little ones.
Refreshments were served and some of the group went to the basement dining room to pack leftover sale items that Catholic Charities might be able to use. They will be contacted later. Those attending were Marjorie Corey, Marie Hewitt, Eldora Carter, Freda Dionne, Glenice Craig, Avis Hume, Lindy Fowler and Dottie Beaton.
Senior Citizens Club
The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens Club met for their regular meeting on May 10 at the West Ridge Manor rec room with 12 members and one guest. A potluck lunch was enjoyed and there was no speaker for the day. After the “Pledge of Allegiance” was repeated, a short meeting was conducted by President Marie Hewitt. She reported that the annual Northern Maine Council on Aging will be held in Ashland on May 21 beginning with registration at 9:30 a.m. It was suggested by Marie that perhaps in July they might have a hotdog roast at the ATV Club’s picnic area on the Gray Road. Plans to be made later. A birthday card was signed for Glenice Craig and a get-well card for Flora Adams who is recuperating at the Mars Hill Health Care Facility. After this short meeting, the group told of the memories they had of their mothers to celebrate Mother’s Day. Those attending were: a guest, Paul DeMerchant; members – Clair and Eldora Carter, Leana DeMerchant, Edith Fuller, Marie Hewitt, Lindy Fowler, Vera Cullins, Arlene Ladner, Ailene Embleton, Joanne Johnson, Ezlie Smith and Rena Richardson.
Visits
Joanne Johnson recently returned from a bus trip to Tiverton, R.I., where she spent time with her daughter, Lori Silvia, husband, Derek, and children, Taylor and McKenna. The Silvias have since moved to Somerset, Mass. On the way back home, Joanne stayed in Bangor for two nights with friend Peggy Culberson and companion Justin. After returning home she drove to an aunt’s funeral service in Bath, New Brunswick, Canada, and stayed two nights with Raymond and Elizabeth Wasson in Esdraleon, New Brunswick. She was also able to visit with Gearldine Rattray and her son, Dana, who preached his grandmother’s funeral service. The Rattrays used to live in Easton’s River de Chute many years ago.
