Many of the local softball and baseball teams had to make up for lost time recently, as the games that were scheduled earlier in the season had to be squeezed in. Even though many of the games were cold and damp, it was better than snow, and the athletes were prepared to go out fighting for a victory.
Tuesday, May 1
The Presque Isle baseball and softball teams traveled to Houlton and fought hard to maintain the upper-hand. For the boys, the game was tied up at 4-4 until the sixth inning when Houlton’s Josh McGuire brought in a three-run triple. Matt Chase doubled and singled with two RBIs for the Wildcats. Dan McCue also brought home two singles and an RBI.
The Lady Wildcats were able to push past Houlton in the top of the 11th inning with a score of 12-11. Molly Hamel scored the winning run for the Wildcats by taking advantage of a passed ball while on third. Chelsea Glovins had a double, two singles and two RBIs in the game. Heather Fowler had two singles; Hamel had a triple and an RBI. Krista Coffin and Angela Norsworthy maintained the pressure from the mound for the Lady ‘Cats.
The Ashland Hornets traveled to play Katahdin, but the girls’ softball team fell short with a score of 26-7 after playing five innings. Whitney Flint and Susan Bulin both singled and scored for the Ashland team.
Central Aroostook’s varsity softball team traveled to Dyer Brook to take on Southern Aroostook. The game was tied 13-13, until SA scored the winning run on an error in the eighth inning. Rachel Donahue doubled and singled, with Latisa Meece singling twice for the Lady Panthers.
Wednesday, May 2
The Panthers hosted games against Madawaska, splitting the victories; with the baseball team winning 14-2, and the Lady Panthers with a loss at 23-13.
For the boys, James Richard hit three singles and three RBIs; Cameron York had a double and two RBIs; and Manny Martinez singled twice during the game. Sarah Long hit in two doubles and a single for four runs scored in the Lady Panther game, and Latisha Neece brought in four singles and two RBIs.
The Presque Isle baseball team took on Mattanawcook in a close game, with PI narrowly missing the win. Mattanawcook took the win with a score of 9-8. Logan York contributed two singles, two doubles and an RBI for the ‘Cats. Dillon kingsbury added a run and Brennan Shaw had two singles.
In a double header against East Grand, both the Washburn softball and baseball teams traveled to Danforth. The softball team swept East Grand, taking the first game with a 24-9 win and the second at 14-11. Erica McDougall nailed a grand slam in the first game, two singles and had four RBIs. Amy Reed had four singles and Amber Reed contributed two singles. In the second game, Washburn’s Kelsey McLaughlin also had a grand slam, two singles and four RBIs.
The boys also were victorious with scores of 13-10 and 10-9 against East Grand. Adam Thompson had five singles and four RBIs; Ben Goupile had four singles; Steve Pesut had a double and a single.
Central Aroostook played Southern Aroostook, but came up short, with the final score at 23-13. Lady Panther, Sarah Long, had two doubles, a single, and drove in four runs; and Latisha Neece contributed four singles and two RBIs.
Thursday, May 3
Ashland’s baseball team swept Van Buren in their home field with a score of 11-1. Kevin Baker doubled and singled, with three RBIs; Henry Milligan had a double, single and two runs in; and Carl Nemer contributed a single RBI. The Lady Hornets were not as lucky, with a win for Van Buren at 12-4. Katie Clark hit three singles and had three RBIs.
Friday, May 4
Washburn’s baseball and softball teams traveled to Southern Aroostook, but lost both games, with the boys score at 11-0 and the girls with a score of 7-6. The Southern Aroostook baseball team proved to be a tough opponent with their second no-hitter in a row. The Lady Beavers had a 6-5 lead at the top of the seventh, but Southern Aroostook drove in two runs in the bottom of the inning. Amber Palmer doubled twice for the Beavers; Rachel Palmer and Kristen Goupille each singled twice in the game.
Ashland’s baseball team hosted a doubleheader against Greater Houlton Christian Academy and pulled in five runs in the fourth inning to secure a 12-4 victory in the first game and also had a 20-4 win for the second. Nick Gimble had a double and two singles in the first game, Tyler Cote had three singles and an RBI, and Tony Baker contributed two singles and an RBI.
In the second game, Kevin Baker had a triple, Lucas Hafford had a double, two singles and one RBI. Isaac Ward also had a double, single and brought in two runners, and Cote had two singles and two RBIs.
The Panther baseball team took a 17-2 win against Hodgdon in their home field. Sam Clockedile doubled and singled with two RBIs, Cameron York had two singles and two RBIs, and Kasey Brewer batted in two runners. Logan McCarthy singled twice.
However, on the softball diamond, Hodgdon took the 17-2 win against the Lady Panthers. Ashley Pryor had two singles and an RBI, while Ashley Estabrook had a double.
Saturday, May 5
Washburn hosted a softball game against Greater Houlton Christian Academy, but the team was unable to stop GHCA, who took the 18-6 win after six innings.
Fort Fairfield also hosted softball and baseball games against Katahdin, but the Tigers lost both games with a boys final score of 21-13 and the girls at 7-1.
The Lady Panther’s softball team played Van Buren, but the Van Buren girls took the win with a score of 9-6.
