Special to the Star-Herald
Have you heard? It’s almost time! June 2 is the Central Aroostook Humane Society’s annual Paws for the Cause walk. What is it? It is a walk, starting at the Central Aroostook Humane Society at 26 Cross Street, Presque Isle, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 2. It is our BIGGEST fund-raiser of the year. This is a time when you bring your dog and enjoy spending time together. We will have refreshments, yard sale items, The Presque Isle Animal Hospital will be there from 10:30-11a.m. for a rabies clinic, there will be a dog wash, prizes, pet portraits and a whole lot of fun. You can pick up a pledge sheet at the Central Aroostook Humane Society or send an e-mail to tc.robin@verizon.net and we will e-mail you one. Please help us to help the animals by participating in our walk; if you can’t walk or don’t want to walk, please sponsor someone who is walking. Please help us to get the word out! It’s fun, it’s easy and it is a great time to show off your beloved dog.
I went for a walk this past weekend and by the end of the walk, my dog Tommy was trailing behind. I hadn’t considered how out of shape my dogs had become over the winter. Like any of us, when you start an exercise program with your dog, you should check with your vet first, to be sure your dog is healthy and there are no medical issues. Then start out slowly at first and work your way up to a more aggressive exercise program. By starting out slowly, you may be able to prevent any lameness issues and both you and your dog will enjoy your walk a lot more.
Another note about my weekend: The skunks are out!! Tucker, my hound, let his nose get the best of him and found a lovely little skunk who sprayed him directly in the chest. It smelled more like fuel than skunk. So here is the recipe that will get the stink out of your dog:
• 1 quart hydrogen peroxide;
• 1/2 cup baking soda; and
• 3 tablespoons dish soap.
Mix them together and use immediately! Do not store, it will explode. I wet my dog down and then rub the mixture into the fur. I allow it to set for a moment and then rinse.
Story Time with the Animals is just around the corner, on May 19 at 10 a.m. We provide a story, refreshments and a visit with the animals at our shelter. Please join us at the shelter for a morning of fun.
