Brownies learn about safety
Members of Brownie Girl Scout Troop 194 in Washburn recently finished earning their Safety Badge and invited a special speaker to give them some important safety information. Washburn Police Officer Matt Collamore spoke to the troop on a variety of safety issues including urging them not to talk to strangers and to stay away from cars whose drivers want them to get in or help them.
He also gave the girls advice on how to pick out some “safe places” in town where they could go, such as the police office, the stores and the library and Rec Center. He told them to always yell and make lots of noise if they can’t find help and worked on a diagram worksheet to show them ideas on who could help them including teachers, parents, neighbors, police and firemen.
The scouts had a few questions for Officer Collamore, and he assured all those attending that they could always go to the police department for assistance and urged them to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency. He told them how much he enjoyed speaking with them and they all thanked him for coming.
Library bookmarks
Starting Friday, May 4, and continuing for a three-week period of time, the library will share a traveling exhibit highlighting the various political activities of Maine’s William S. Cohen. The exhibit uses facsimiles of photographs, handwritten notes, speeches and campaign memorabilia from Cohen’s papers. Topics include his successful 1972 bid for Maine’s Second Congressional District seat, the constitutional powers granted to Congress, the busy life of a senator and documents from the Watergate and Iran-Contra investigations.
The Cohen Papers were donated by Sec. Cohen to the Folger Library at the U of M in 1996. He also included several compact disks in 2001 covering material from the Department of Defense. The U of M is also home to the William S. Cohen Center for International Policy and Commerce.
The exhibit is traveling to venues along the route of Cohen’s 1972 famous campaign walk from the New Hampshire border to Fort Kent. The freestanding exhibit will be on display at the Washburn Memorial Library. The display includes interactive panels designed to appeal to young children and all area residents are urged to stop by the library to see it.
Also at the library is the May Story Time to be held on Monday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m. There will be stories, games, prizes and refreshments. The theme for the story time is “Arthur’s Birthday,” and all are invited to the party.
There will be a meeting of the Washburn Memorial Library Board of Trustees at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9.
On Tuesday, May 15, the Middle School Book Group will meet at the library at 5 p.m. The book under discussion will be “Bridge to Terabithia.”
