Washburn athletes honored in ceremony

Washburn District High School recently held their 2007 Winter Sports Awards program at the Camille “Doc” Albert Gymnasium on March 29 at 6 p.m. Varsity Club member Amy Reed welcomed everyone. Athletic Director Ron Ericson thanked the athletes and staff for all their efforts during the season.
    Jeremiah Sjoberg, WDHS student, presented a slide show of basketball highlights from the past season before the formal program.
Tammy Tatlock, girls’ volleyball coach, presented certificates to Rachel Palmer, Alex Bird, Amy Reed, Kristen Goupille, Felicia Cochran, Sydney Beckwith, Jordan Chandler, Morgan Berube, Erica McDougall, Kelsee McLaughlin and Sara Davis. Palmer received a certificate for being named to the Tourney All-Star Team and a trophy for being the Most Valuable Player.
George McLaughlin, boys’ volleyball coach, presented certificates to Evan Sperrey, Ethan Doody, David Roy, Adam Thompson, Steve Pesut, Matt Connolly, Travis Conley, Brian Campbell and Caio Holland. The team was congratulated for being Aroostook County runners-up. Holland received a certificate for being named to the Tourney All-Star team and trophy for being the Most Valuable Player.
The 2003 boys’ soccer team was recognized for being Eastern Maine runners-up and belatedly presented with the banner. Accepting the banner were alumni Jason Thompson and Nathan Doody along with seniors team members Adam Thompson, Steve Pesut, Troy Wilcox, Jon Silber, Ben Goupille and former coach Larry Worcester.
Jessica Haley, cheerleading coach, presented certificates and a pin to Jackie Abar, and certificates and letters to Kelsey King, Kira Swimm, Alison King, Julie Stephenson and Hilary Harris. Alison King was named Most Improved and Kelsey King was named Most Outstanding Cheerleader.
The athletic director presented a special varsity letter to Jeremiah Sjoberg in recognition of his coverage of Washburn District High School sports activities.
The junior varsity girls’ coach Josh Blackstone presented certificates to Morgan Berube, Amber Reed, Felicia Cochran, Jordan Chandler, Alicia Saucier, Rachel Donnelly and Sydney Beckwith. Chandler was named Most Improved Player and Reed was presented a trophy for being the Most Valuable Player.
Mike Hartford, coach of the junior varsity boys’ basketball team, presented certificates to Jensen Reed, Adam Wilcox, Justin Howe, Cody Frank, Caio Holland, Brian Campbell, Evan Sperrey, Matt Howe, Curtis Thompson, Justin Howe and Jake Theriault. Reed was named the Most Improved Player and Campbell was named the Most Valuable Player.
Chris Hallett, coach of the varsity boys’ basketball team, presented certificates to Jensen Reed and Cody Frank. Receiving a pin and a certificate were managers Owen James Amber Palmer, Margo McIntosh and Sally Reed and players Steve Pesut, Adam Thompson, Matt Connolly, Alex Morrow, Alex McIntosh, Nick McIntosh, Brian Campbell, Troy Wilcox, Caio Holland and Ben Goupille. Earning three-year plaques were Steve Pesut and Matt Connolly. Receiving certificates for being named All-Aroostook were Pesut and Thompson. Sally Reed was presented a varsity letter jacket for having received four varsity letters in one sport. Thompson was named to the 1000 Point Club and received a plaque commemorating his achievement of 1000 career points. Holland, an exchange student from Brazil, was presented a varsity fleece jacket for his outstanding participation in sports at Washburn District High School this year.
Ron Ericson, girls’ varsity basketball coach presented certificates to Felicia Cochran, Jordan Chandler and managers Alicia Saucier and Sydney Beckwith. Receiving certificates and pins were Kelsee McLaughlin, Erika McDougall, Alex Bird, Morgan Berube, Rachel Palmer, Paige Huston, Amy Reed, Sara Davis and Amber Reed. Also receiving a certificate and pin was manager Owen James. Earning third year plaques were Amy Reed, Alex Bird, Erica McDougall and Kelsee McLaughlin. Players recognized for being named to the All-Aroostook team were Bird and McDougall. The Coach’s Award was presented to Bird. McDougall and McLaughlin were named co-Most Valuable Players. Receiving the Varsity Letter jackets for earning eight varsity letters were McLaughlin, McDougall and Davis.
The girls’ basketball team was presented the Eastern Maine runners-up banner and each team member was presented a picture plaque recognizing their efforts.
