August Festival information
The August Festival Committee is requesting some local talent to step forward and help with the Saturday Night Show. They are interested in groups who will be available to put on acts, skits, songs, comedy acts and other talents.

Each group will have the stage and spotlight for 10 to 15 minutes to share their talents with the audience. The committee hopes to have some input and volunteers for their June Festival Committee meeting. The next scheduled Festival Committee meeting has been set for Wednesday, May 2, at the Civic Center starting  6:30 p.m.

The theme for this year is A Look at the Past, and the Committee is requesting anyone with ideas of displays, programs or parade floats and demonstrations to step forward and share their ideas.
Committee members are needed as well as residents coming to voice their ideas, take on projects and help in any way they can.

Rotary wheels
The Washburn Rotary held their annual Rotary Supper and Auction on Saturday, April 28, at the high school, and by all accounts it appeared to be a success. The food was great and guests enjoyed everything from appetizers and salad to side dishes, veggies and rolls and some great pies, as well as the main courses of turkey and roast beef with all the fixin’s. Thanks went out to the main cooks, Stuart and Barbara Turner, with school cook Jodi Dickinson, her husband Andy and the Rotarians who assisted in setting up serving the meal and working the auction, including: Andy White, Cindy Richendollar, Kermit Fuller, Mike Umphrey, Keith Brown, Charlotte Griffin, Ellen Fitzsimmons, Dennis Harris, Larry Harrison and Peggy Bugbee.
There were over 100 attending, and the efforts of the very personable auctioneer, Tom Drew, were more than appreciated by all. The audience truly enjoyed his jokes and the way he ‘worked’ the crowd. He was full of humor and good auctioneering, resulting in all items sold, including those in the silent bidding. All this, and Drew generously donated his services for the benefit of the Washburn Rotary.
The Scouts from Troop 177 also assisted in setting up as well as ably assisting the auctioneer by delivering items purchased by the audience and roamed among the crowd selling raffle tickets for the raffles for savings bonds and cash. Scouts and leaders included Larry Harrison, Ron Rand, Keegan Page, Nicholas Gumprecht, Josh Flagg, Bryan Schurman, David Roy, Jensen Reed, Andy White Jr., Curtis Thompson, Daniel Roy, Stephen Kinney and Greg Page.
There was a variety of different activities throughout the evening including a silent auction and the $100 door prize along with several cash and savings bonds raffled off. Winners included: Gwen Bragg, Ellen Fitzsimmons, Rodney Sperrey, Charles Currier Sr., Debbie Rideout and Tammy Bragg.
There was an informational table for new memberships and some special pledge cards available for the Bob Ellis Playground Equipment Fund. The 2007 Rotary Calendars were also available and much of the food remaining from the supper was sold during a break in the auction.
The Rotary received most of its auction items from local businesses and artisans, and the monies earned from the auction will be mostly spent locally, enhancing our community.

Boy Scout notes
The Boy Scouts of Washburn’s Troop 177 met last week at the campsite on the Everett Road for an overnight campout. During this event, the scouts got their camp and area ready for occupation after a long winter. They cleaned everything in sight, and gave some cooking and tent-pitching instructions for the newest scouts joining the troop.
The troop will now be meeting at the campsite for the summer season, moving from their winter headquarters at the Rec Center.
The troop will be busy in the next few weeks, with a bottle drive coming up and picking trash on the property at Huber in Easton. Huber gives the boys a donation and Ferris One Stop provides pizza and sodas for their pick-up efforts.
The boys will also be working at the Farm Credit Bureau in Presque Isle, raking and cleaning their area. There are also plans being made for the troop to sell hot dogs at a car show at Gagnon’s Auto. All these fund-raisers will be an effort for the boys to pay their way to the Scout Camp at Katahdin Scout Reserve this summer.
Troop members and leaders include: Andy White Jr., Keegan Page, Nicholas Gumprecht, Josh Flagg, Bryan Schurman, David Roy, Jensen Reed, Curtis Thompson, Daniel Roy, Stephen Kinney, Greg Page, Mike Thompson, Ron Rand and Larry Harrison.

Happy birthday, Lorraine
Lorraine Harrison got to enjoy a special birthday celebration with her friends at the Lidstone Memorial Methodist Church on her 82nd birthday, Sunday, April 22. It was a “real surprise” and she had a special driver for Sunday service, her son, Larry Harrison.
After the Sunday morning service, the congregation made the trip downstairs for their regular fellowship and coffee, but with a fun twist this week. Lorraine was surprised with a beautifully decorated birthday cake and the group all sang “Happy Birthday” to one of their own.
She enjoyed a ‘shower’ of cards and special greetings from all her friends. Unable to attend, but sending well wishes were he son John and wife Laura Harrison of Plainville, Conn. Lorraine has two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
