CARIBOU – Carroll I. Goodwin Jr., 88, died March 20, 2007. He was born July 12, 1918, in South Gardiner, the son of Velma L. (Easler) and Carroll I. Goodwin Sr.
He was educated in the public schools of Pejepscot, Lisbon Falls, South Gardiner and Gardiner High School and attended the University of Maryland in Weisbaden, Germany and Madrid, Spain. He was employed by Bath Iron Works prior to induction into the federal service, June 1, 1942.
He became flight engineer-gunner in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was shot down over Dortmund, Germany, Aug. 12, 1943, and became a prisoner of war until returned to the United States military control, May 4, 1945. He was held at Stalag No. XVII B, Kremes, Austria. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a chief master sergeant, July 1, 1973, after more than 31 years of active duty.
After retirement, he was employed as head loan officer of Loring Federal Credit Union. He was a past president of the Caribou Country Club and served on the board of directors from 1977 to 1986. He was a former member of the Service Corps of Retired Executives; past president, former secretary and member of the Caribou Rotary Club; and honored by being named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1993. He was a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, American Ex-Prisoner of War, American Legion, American Philatelic Society, Disabled American Veterans and the National Rifle Association.
He was also a member of the Caterpillar Club and the BPOE Masonically. Illustrious Noble Carroll was raised a master Mason in Hermon Lodge No. 32 AF & AM, Gardiner, Nov. 30, 1948, and served as master in 1993. He was initiated into the Consistory in the Valley of Santa Fe, Orient of New Mexico, May 12, 1949; exalted as a royal arch Mason in Garfield No. 48, RAC in Caribou. He served as high priest from 1981 to 1986 and as secretary from 1987-2003; anointed a high priest in the Order of the High Priesthood, April 3, 1982; appointed grand master of the 2nd Veil of the Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons of Maine 1984/1985 and as grand captain of the Host in 1985/1986. He served as district deputy grand high priest from 2003 to 2005; elected as grand scribe in 2005 and grand king in April 2006; greeted in Aroostook Council No. 16, R&SM, Presque Isle, April 30, 1976, was illustrious master in 1985, received the grade of thrice illustrious master, April 13, 1985. He was knighted in St. Aldemar Commandery No. 17, Houlton, March 18, 1976, serving as eminent commander from 1984-1986. He was elected as grand junior warden of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Maine in 1985 and served as R.E. grandcommander 1990-1991. He became a knight commander of the Temple of the Grand Encampment, Knights Templar of the U.S. of America, May 25, 1994. He was elected to membership in Cross and Crown Tabernacle No. LIII, Holy Royal Arch Knight; Templar Priests, Nov. 8, 1987, and was very eminent preceptor in 1996.
He was a member and deputy governor of Dirigo York Rite College No. 103 of Brunswick and also a member of Katahdin York Rite College of Hampden. He was awarded the Order of the Purple Cross and was an associate regent of the York Rite Sovereign College of North America, Aug. 9, 2003. He became a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Bangor and the Consistory, Valley of Portland. His membership included, The Royal Order of Scotland, The Maine College of Masonic Societies Rosicruciana in Civitatibus Foederatis, Eusebius Conclave No. 3-Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine, New Hampshire Society of Veteran Freemasons, Knight of the York Rite Cross of Honor, Pine Cone Council No. 31, Knight Masons, Grand Master's Council A, Allied Masonic Degrees, the Past Officers Association, Knight Crusaders of the Cross, Maine Chapter of Knights Preceptor and The Philalethes Society, the High Twelve Club No. 730 and Portland Chapter No. 92, National Sojourners, Inc. He was a member, past worthy patron and treasurer of Elizabeth Chapter No. 108, OES, Caribou. Due to a recent merger, he was a member of Lunar Chapter No. 126, Presque Isle. He was also charter and life member of the OES Treasurers Association.
Illustrious Carroll was created a Nobel in Oriental Temple, AAONMS in Troy, N.Y., May 22, 1965. He was made an associate member of Anah Temple by Potentate Harold L. Chute in 1981, and was also appointed to the Circus Committee. He was appointed an aide in 1983 by Potentate Harold W. Crocker and demitted from Oriental Temple, Oct. 30, 1985, and affiliated with Anah Temple, Dec. 6, 1985. He was appointed outer guard, Jan. 18, 1986, by Potentate Larry L. Hersom and was elected and installed as potentate of Anah Temple, January 1996. He was a member of the Anah Past Masters Unit, the Bangor Court No. 150, ROJ, the Cachina Billiken Klub, and several Shrine clubs throughout the state.
He married the former Geraldine M. "Gerry" (Reed) of South Gardiner, May 20, 1943. He is survived by one son, Carroll I. Goodwin III and his wife, Pauline, of Alfred; five grandchildren, Khristi, Carroll I. "Dusty" IV and Karla S. Goodwin, Kelly Souliere and Lewis Barrows; six great-grandchildren, Jasmin and Logan Estes, Courtney Koller, Devon and Hali Goodwin and Connor Souliere; one cousin, Donald and his wife, Nancy Harrington, of Clinton. He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine, March 14, 2007.
Friends called 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Caribou, with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Spring interment will be at South Gardiner Cemetery.
