Although it hasn’t snowed any considerable amount in over a week, area roads continued to be a problem over the weekend as winds created drifting conditions, causing a number of vehicles to go off the road.
The most serious accident reportedly occurred on Route 1A on Saturday when a Presque Isle woman lost control of her car around 7:30 a.m.
Jacquelyne Morrow, 24, was driving southbound in her 2001 PT Cruiser when got caught in the slush and lost control on a curve. Her car spun, struck the embankment and flipped on its roof. Morrow was not injured. Her car sustained an estimated $4,000 in damage.
Dep. Lawrence Goff, of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, investigated the accident.
The Presque Isle Police Department responded to a handful of reports between Saturday and Sunday, with the majority of accidents taking place on a section of Route 10 – the Easton Road – just east of the Centerline Road intersection. Drifting conditions kept plows busy on both days. In between runs, however, snow-covered road conditions caused several drivers to lose control of their vehicles and end up in snowbanks adjacent to the roadway.
No injuries were reported in any of the accidents and only minor vehicle damage was involved. Once towed back on the road, drivers were able to continue their journeys.
Washburn emergency personnel and plow crews kept an eye on drifted areas in their community as well over the weekend. Route 164 on either side of Crouseville was especially hazardous for a time due to drifting conditions on both days.
Route 227 between Mapleton and Ashland also had considerable drifting, making driving treacherous in spots as snow blew across fields and into the roadway.
